Songwriting

The Song is a place for anyone. Whether you are a seasoned musician/songwriter, or just beginning to find your voice. The material is relevant to anyone wherever you are on your creative journey.

So what is your story? Not as a stagnant re-telling, but as an alive becoming, one that, when spoken, resonates in your body, mind, soul as True. P.J. Curtis says, the search for meaning is the search for the lost chord. Just as our first experience of life came from the cord between mother and child, so to a deep chord runs through the soul of each being.

What does it mean to re-familiarize ourselves with the chord of the soul? What does it mean to create, speak, sing, breathe from this place?

I have been writing songs since middle school. Songwriting found me, opened me, moved me, and is an integral part of life for me. This word—songwriting— holds a lot of different meanings, for different people. This offering is my own exploration of what songwriting and the creative process is, how it has been a catalyst in my life, and how you too, can access this river of creativity within your own life.

listen to

the song,

it lives

within

and all

around

you.

“When you speak from that deep, inner voice, you are really speaking from the unique tabernacle of your own presence. There is a voice within you that no one, not even you, has ever heard. Give yourself the opportunity of silence and begin to develop your listening in order to hear, deep within yourself, the music of your own spirit”.

John O’ Donehue

there is a song

always.

it exists

not

because of us,

but as

a part of us.

Savannah's songwriting class is less of a class about how to write songs (those kinds of classes are a dime a dozen) and more of a repeated invitation to explore the wilderness of song that lives within and without all of us. Some of my classmates offered a single chant over the entire ten week course; others were writing songs every week; but none of that mattered. What mattered was the way each of us was moved to open ourselves back into that childlike, vulnerable place where the forces of creativity-- of creation-- flowed through us. It is not easy to make yourself vulnerable like that, especially with new people, but Savannah quickly created a safe and loving community where we supported each other in our adventures, both in moments when we were brave and moments in which we lacked courage entirely. If you are looking for a community, if you are looking to do the tender and exhilarating work that is letting go of control and allowing the world to move you, then Savannah is the teacher for you.
